The heatsink option depends on the total power input of the Corona II module. The usage of heatsinks is mandatory.

The total power input is affected by the following parameters:

Current in the control unit
Duty cycle of LED operation in pulse mode

The cooling power of a heatsink is affected by the following parameters:

Ambient temperature
Orientation of the Corona II module

Suitable heatsink for your application

Calculation of the maximum operating temperature of the Corona II module

To choose a suitable heatsink the maximum module temperature of the Corona II housing has to be calculated:

T_CORONA = T_A + P_CORONA · R_TH · F₁ · F₂ · F₃

T_CORONA	Temperature of the Corona II housing at the hottest point
T_A	Ambient temperature
P_CORONA	Power input of one Corona II channel. It is assumed that a Corona II module with several channels is operated with a unique operating current I_WORK for all channels.
R_TH	Thermal resistance of the heatsink. Refer to ID7 Heatsinks.
F₁	Correction factor for mounting orientation of the heatsink
	horizontal mounting	F₁ = 1.00

F₂	Correction factor for module length
	for 170 mm	F₂ = 0.88
	for 340 mm	F₂ = 0.92

Example

A Corona II module with length 340 mm and heat sink option B is operated at an ambient temperature of 25 °C. The module is mounted horizontally and has a good thermal contact to a large solid machine frame. The module is operated with a channel current of 0.9 A. The temperature is calculated as follows:

T_CORONA = 25 °C + 34 W · 1.52 K/W · 1.00 · 0.92 · 0.85 = 65 °C

If the channel current is increased to 1.8 A the temperature is calculated as follows:

T_CORONA = 25 °C + 74 W · 1.52 K/W · 1.00 · 0.92 · 0.85 = 82 °C

The maximum operating temperature of the Corona II module is 75 °C. The temperature at 1.8 A is too high. Use an additional air flow or a heat sink with a lower thermal resistence R_THto decrease the temperature.
